Brandýs nad Orlicí is a city in the Ústí nad Orlicí region. It lies on both banks of the Tichá Orlice River on the junction of the regional city Ústí nad Orlicí (11 km from Brandýs) and Chocen (5 km from Brandýs). The Pardubice - Česká Třebová railway line, leads through the city, thereby making good train connection an advantage. The historical centre of the city has been an Urban Heritage Zone since 1995. HistoryThe oldest part of Brandýs is called Loukoť, documented way back to 1227. At the end of the 13th century Jindřich of Brandýs had a castle built. The castle and estate alternated the hands of numerous feudal families: the Lords of Boskovice, the Šternberks and Kostkovas of Postupice briefly. In the 2nd half of the 15th century Brandýs became a significant centre of the Unity of the Brethren and in 1503 the city earned the right to have its very own emblem. Under the rule of the Pernsteins the castle was demolished in 1507. In 1564, Karel the Elder of Žerotín was born here, who provided protection and asylum during the White Mountain period to the Order of the Fraternity of Priests, which also included J. A. Komenský. From the 2nd half of the 17th century, Brandýs belonged to the Trautmannsdorf, who commissioned the chateau that still stands today in 1781. After the railway was built, the city became a highly sought after summer resort. The most significant monumentsEach visitor to the city should not miss paying a visit to the ruins of the castle built before 1289, where the remains of the walls, tower body and cellars of the castle palace have been preserved. |
The city is also home to the Memorial Hall of Jan Amos Komensky, which houses an exhibition reminding us of the life and works with emphasis on his stay in Brandýs and the works created here. The city also boasts a unique natural labyrinth, which is created from European Hornbeam. LegendA long time ago, a girl of noble blood lived in the castle in Brandýs, however, not a rather happy life. It all happened when the child was expected, everyone was waiting for Fate, who was delayed in the forest and did not arrive at the castle until midnight. The devil’s hour cursed the girl with a delusional mind and placed a curse upon her that she would always arrive late wherever she would go. One day a poor young man fell in love with the maiden but was not worthy of her, however he managed to arrange a meeting at the old castle. The girl actually came in time but never saw him. The young man wanted to cool his burning body in the river but wild waters swallowed him up. Since then the girl only dressed in black and never even found peace in her grave. She appeared in the castle ruins as a nebulous, white ghost. Sources used: http://cs.wikipedia.org, http://www.mesto-brandys.cz |
