Slatiňany
|
The city Slatiňany is found in the picturesque region at the foot of the Iron Mountains 4 km south of the district city Chrudim. The city lies at an altitude of 270 m a.s.l. Slatiňany is located on the railway line Pardubice - Havlíčkův Brod. HistoryThe first written reference is from 1294, when only a wooden Gothic fortress stood here on the rocky point above the Chrudimka River. It was apparently owned by František of Slatiňany. At the close of the 16th century, the estate was bought by Prague townsman Bohuslav Mazanec of Frymburk and instead of the fortress he had a Renaissance chateau built. An entire row of subsequent owners ensued, such as Jan Sigmund Knobloch, the Berk family of Dubé and Lipné, František Adam Count of Bubna and Lipné, František Adam of Bubna and Litic, Josef František of Schőnfeld, Prince Jan Adam of Auersperg and other descendents of this family. The greatest flourishing was experienced during the reign of the Auerspergs. Slatiňany became an economically and culturally live city. A sugar refinery and cube-making factory, a factory for artificial fertilisers, a steam sawmill and distillery were established here. In 1971, Slatiňany were promoted to a city. The most significant monumentsOne of the most significant monuments in the city is the State Chateau Slatiňany with the Hippological Museum and English park. |
A horse breeding farm neighbours the chateau, which has been a part of the National Horse breeding Farm Kladruby nad Labem since 1992. Religious monuments include the Church of St. Martin from the 14th century, which was rebuilt into the Neo-Gothic style in 1891 – 1892. The Vrchlicky Mound (favourite place of Jaroslav Vrchlicky) spreads in the cherry orchard above the city. On the slope of the Hura Hill stands the miniature of Kočičí Castle, which was built here by Vilemína Auersperg in the 19th century. It was intended for play for the chateau’s children. LegendThe name of the city Slatiňany is derived from the bogs, in the middle of which the settlement was established. However, in Slatiňany a legend also exists about a fellow, chasing a boar with a wooden stick and yelling “After it with a lath!” which is more likely the product of folk literature from later on. Slatiňany - horse farm
The Slatiňany Horse Farm was established in 1898 as a chateau horse farm. The farm was created from original stables for racing horse and horses used in dog hunts; these buildings belonged to the adjacent chateau and domain of the Auesperg family. In 1992 the facility became part of the National Kladruby Horse Farm. Mares and stallions are exercised in the training centre.
