Sezemice is a city which is situated along the Loučná River nearby the dominants of the Elbe River region, the Kuněticky Mountains. The city is located about 6 km northeast of the district city Pardubice. It belongs among the oldest residential areas of the Pardubice region. Together with 9 other municipalities, the city belongs to the Union of Loučna Municipalities. HistoryThe Sezemice area was settled already before our era. The first written reference to the city dates back to 1227, when nobleman Kojata left the parish village Sezemice in his last will. In the 2nd half of the 13th century, the Sezemice Women’s Cistercian Monastery was established. Already in 1421 it was burnt to the ground by the Hussites. As opposed to the local Church of the Holy Trinity, the monastery was never rebuilt. After the Hussite wars, Sezemice had difficulties, until the Pernsteins purchased the estate. Sezemice became a city in 1834. Even though the city did not become a battleground during the World Wars, several of its inhabitants fell in the wars. |
The most significant monumentsThe Church of the Holy Trinity belongs among the most significant monuments. It was originally a monastery church for the Women’s Cistercian Order. Nearby the church is a massive eight-sided belfry with a bulb tower, which most probably dates back to the 16th century. It is the only belfry of this size and shape in Bohemia. LegendAccording to locals, the bells in Pardubice used to forecast the weather. When you could hear them all the way to Pardubice, it meant it would rain soon.
