Ronov nad Doubravou

The city Ronov nad Doubravou, called the "Town on the palm of your hand" according to a film of the same name, which was partly filmed here, is situated at the foot of the Iron Mountains at an altitude of 255 m a.s.l. The city is found in the district of Chrudim, in the Pardubice region.

History

The city was established rather early after the first written reference on settlements in the Iron Mountains, which dates back to 1137. The first written mention of the municipality is from 1307. Ronov nad Doubravou was established by Oldřich, the third son of Smil of Lichtemburk. Gottfried, the former bailiff of Podoli, received hereditary bailiffing of the city. He settled the granted land with people on 24 fields, evidently German colonists, whom he brought over. In 1488, King Ladislav permitted Ronov two annual markets and in 1674 the city received the right to a third market from Leopold I. Most probably the city never had walls and thus Ronov never developed into a significant agglomeration. It was not promoted to a city with privileges until 1908 by František Josef I. In 1945, the Local National Committee was established in Ronov nad Doubravou and thereby the statute of the city was abolished for 53 years.

The most significant monuments

The central building of the square is the Church of St. Lawrence. In the lower part of the park stands the Memorial to the Fallen in World War I and a fountain. A building is found in Svatokřížské Street, which is an example of unique folk architecture. The most valuable part of the frontispiece is the Late Baroque gable with stucco relief decoration. A significant monument in the city is Bílek’s (Nečasova) Villa. Today it is the Gallery of Antonín Chittussi. The building serves for exhibitions and other works of art.
