Luže

The city Luže is situated 130 km east of Prague, 22 km east of Chrudim and 15 km south of Vysoky Mýto, on the borders between the Elbe Lowlands and Czech-Moravian Highlands in the district of Chrudim. The closeness to the geological fault has led to the high occurrence of rare and interesting natural formations in the surroundings. A clean environment has been preserved in the Luže Basin, where the degree of pollution is almost zero. The municipality lies in the forested landscape in the near vicinity of the protected water supply zone. The centre of Luže has been declared an Urban Heritage Zone.

History

The first reference to Luže as a settlement dates back to 1250, when it was founded by joining the older settlement Kamenicza and the newly established town Luza. However, an older settlement already existed here at the beginning of the 12th century. In written documentation, the first reference to the city is from 1349, when Luza was already the centre of handicrafts, trade and farming in the surroundings far and wide. The history of the settlement is closely knit with the fate of Košumberk Castle. At first, Luže and the surrounding villages were a part of the estate of well known personalities in Czech history, the Lords of Chlum and Košumberks, later the Slavats of Chlum and Košumberks, important representatives of Protestant nobility. In the middle of the 17th century, the Hieserl family took over the estate. In 1690 the estate was granted to the Jesuit order.

The last owner of the estate was the Bavarian Thurn – Taxis family, who owned the estate until the establishment of an independent state.

The most significant monuments

History left significant architectural and cultural monument in Luže. The oldest of them is the Gothic castle Košumberk Castle with a Renaissance addition, which was first mentioned in 1318.  The wide Luže Basin is ruled by the double-towered pilgrimage Church Dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians, in 1690 - 1695 it was built by the Italian architect G. B. Alliprandi. In the middle of the square is the historical town hall from 1542. It is also worth visiting the Gothic Church of St. Bartholomew, already referred to in 1381. The fate of the Jewish community is reminded by the newly repaired synagogue from the 18th century and extensive Jewish cemetery about 1 km north of Luže.

  • basket Luže - Jewish ghetto, synagogue New window.
Luže - Jewish ghetto, synagogue. The establishment of the ghetto dates to the mid-16th century and according to records the ghetto was chained shut at night. The majority of houses after reconstruction stand here today, including House No. 44 where a Jewish ritual bath (mikva) was once located; remains of the equipment for heating the water remain at the site today. The synagogue stood in the centre of the ghetto, perhaps 100 metres southwest from the square. The synagogue served until 1940; afterwards it was used as a warehouse...

  • basket Luže - Jewish cemetery New window.
Luže - Jewish cemetery. An execution site was originally located near the cemetery. Such an undignified site is typical for a Jewish cemetery; the authorities sold Jews the least valuable grounds for their pious locations. The origin likely dates to the first half of the 17th century and burials were performed here up until the Second World War. The oldest preserved tombstones are from the 17th century, and of particular value are the Baroque and Classicist tombstones, including the eastern Bohemian asymmetrical stela,...
