Kladsko Borderland
Roughly speaking, the tourist area of the Kladské pomezí (the Kladsko Borderland) consists of the territory of the Broumov Spur and Náchodsko. If we had to sum up this little pocket of the Czech Republic in one word, then it we would probably say “variety”, which applies to every part of this region.
First of all, it has a charming hilly countryside with beautiful valleys. The largest natural attractions are the rock cities in the Adrspach – Teplice Rocks (Adršpašsko - teplických skalách)
, in fabulous Ostaši
, and at the Bromouv Walls (Broumovských stěnách)
. In this remote territory, there are places that are even more remote and more curious – such as the Javor and Jestřeb Mountains.
Let’s take a look at the architecture: Baroque gems in the form of the Broumov Monastery
or the Chapel of the Virgin Mary on the Star at the Broumov Walls. The rustic Secession work of Dušan Jurkovič in the Metuje Valley in Peklo
. The Renaissance square in Nové město nad Metují
.
Now lets take a look at the area’s literary connections – this region was the birthplace of Alois Jirásek, Božena Němcová, Karel and Josef Čapek, and Josef Škvorecký. Chateaux with extraordinary expositions will please history buffs; unique little wood churches and original Silesian homesteads are certain to charm those who appreciate rustic architecture.
Those who admire military structures will want to see the region’s artillery stronghold complex, built during the period before World War Two, as well as the Theresean stronghold in Josefov
. Kladské pomezí is excellent for hiking and has a great network of bike paths. It also has plenty to offer to water sport enthusiasts, horseback riders, agrotourists, cross-country skiers, and especially rock climbers and people who simply like to admire romantic rocks.
Hiking
Kladské pomezí is interlaced with a very dense network of marked paths that has a long history – this district was once known as Jirásek’s Country and has traditionally attracted hikers. The most popular trails include one that leads through the Metuje Valley from Náchod to Nové Město nad Metují, as well as one that runs through Babiččin Valley by Ratibořice
, and those that take hikers through the rock cities. Hiking trails are naturally connected to a system of marked paths in the Orlické Mountains, in Hradecka, and in Krkonoše.
Cycling
The most attractive bike paths run along the valley rivers – for instance from Olešnice in the Orlické Mountains through Rokoli and Peklo to Nové Město nad Metují, from Teplice nad Metují to Náchod, or along the Stěnava River from Meziměsto to Broumov. The most frequent destinations for cyclists are the Babiččin Valley or, in summer, the Brodský and Špinka ponds by Červená Kostelec, where the water is good for swimming. Also in summer, a cyclobus runs in the district of the Broumov spur.
Water sports
Nearly every kind of water sport, including windsurfing, can be enjoyed at the Rozkoš Dam
by Česká Skalice.
The advantageous, that is higher, water conditions make the Metuje River navigable from its mouth to Labe v Jaroměři, covering a distance of 69 km. The real pearl of a trip along the Metuje is the roughly four kilometer stretch from Peklo to Nové Město nad Metují, where the river flows through a deep and narrow forested valley and its difficulty ranges between levels of WW II – III.
Ski tourism
There is excellent terrain for cross-country skiing here, especially in the Jestřebí Mountains and around Machov. When there is enough snow, the trails from the mountains to the lower lands are popular and accessible by skibus.
