Jevíčko

Jevíčko is a Moravian city on the southeast end of the Pardubice region in the Svitavy district. Jevíčko is a natural and economic centre of the magical region called Malá Haná for its incredible fertility. The region stretches from Boskovice to Trnávec, i.e. a length of 25 km and 3-5 km in width. The Malá Haná Lowlands, surrounded by forested hills, is a part of the geological gully Boskovická Trench, which we can see on every geological map from Žamberk to Austrian Krems. The historical centre of the city is an Urban Heritage Zone.

History

The first reference to the city dates back to 1249. The city lay on the merchant’s route connecting Prague with Brno and Olomouc, so that it had suitable requirements for further development. In 1258 it was promoted by King Přemysl Otakar II to a royal city with Magdeburg rights. At the beginning of the 15th century it was encircled by stone walls with four gates oriented according to the world coordinates. During the Hussite wars, the city was conquered and raised to the ground several times. The Thirty Years War was also a tragedy for the city. In 1646 the Swedes seized the city. In 1680 almost 400 inhabitants of the city fell victim to the plague. In the 18th century, the Augustinian Monastery and lord’s estate were liquidated under Josefin’s reforms and the properties were divided and sold. Before World War II, a rather large Jewish community and German minority lived in the city.

The most significant monuments

The square offers visitors the chance to see the plague column from 1714, the statue of St. Jan Nepomucky from 1730 and a fountain.

Also, a statue of T.G. Masaryk stands here from 1930, which was concealed during the occupation. The most significant religious monument is inarguably the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which was originally a part of the Augustinian convent established in 1353 to 1372. Nearby the church is the city tower, the city’s dominant which can be seen from afar. In Okružní Street, a part of the city walls have been preserved. In Soudní Street you can visit the Jewish synagogue.

Legend

Legend relates to the burial grounds on Red Hill. Years ago, one man from Jevíčka came here for chicory. While he was sitting here one evening, he saw some sort of a white figure in the distance, getting closer and closer and lamenting. The man got scared and went home quickly. However, the following day he saw the white figure again, lamenting woefully and crying where there used to be military graves. The man stopped coming here ever since as he was afraid of the white figure, but when he kept thinking about her, he realised that she probably appeared there to remind people of the last place of rest of unknown heroes. He was among the first to endeavour for the government to contribute to having a stone monument built here.
