Jablonné nad Orlicí

The city Jablonné nad Orlicí lies at the foot of the Orlický Mountains, on the slope above the Ticha Orlice River, approximately 13 km southeast of the city Žamberk. The city is a significant economic force of the region with developed industry. First class road number 11 leads through the city from Prague through Hradec Králové, Žamberk to Ostrava and the electrified railway route 024 Ústí nad Orlicí – Letohrad – Hanušovice branching off to Poland as well in nearby Lichkova. The historical centre of the city has been declared an Urban Heritage Zone.

History

Jablonné was first mentioned as a market community already in 1093, safety records from 1304. King Václav II gave Jablonné to Záviš of Falkenstein, in the 14th century it belonged to Zbraslav Monastery. After the Hussite wars, it was seized by the Kostkas of Postupice, and then it belonged to the lords of Pernstein and the Hrzans of Harasov from 1508. In 1622, Karel Prince of Lichtenstein purchased it, and it and the surroundings remained in the ownership of his descendents until 1918. During the 20th century, factories for books, furniture, electrical equipment and one of the first for telephones and broadcasting devices were established here.

The most significant monuments

The most significant monuments include the Baroque Church of St. Bartholomew above the city dating back to 1680.

There are several Late Baroque buildings on the square-shaped square, which is a heritage zone, including two timbered buildings with characteristic gables, and the Marian Column from 1748. Each visitor should not miss the Permanent exhibition of the history of the city - history, native Petr Figulus Jablonský, items from farmsteads, households, club activities and the lives of inhabitants from the 19th and 20th century.

Legend

In the autumn of each year, carts with servants were sent about the villages to collect taxes in kind. Occasionally phoney collectors arose, which is why a monk who had a cane rode with them.  According to legend, the cart full of fragrant naturals attracted a bear. The servants fled in front of it, the bear climbed on top of the cart but the horses started to run and the bear could not jump down. In order to keep from falling, the bear had to grab the cane. He rode all the way to Jablonské Square holding the cane and there he managed to jump off and flee to the place where the church now stands. The inhabitants of Jablonne managed to stop the runaway horses and the authorities allowed them to include a bear with a cane in their emblem.
