Horní Jelení

The city Horní Jelení is situated in the centre of a triangle, the peaks which are formed by the cities Holice, Vysoké Mýto and Choceň. The city lies amid thick forests of the Třebechovické Basin on the east periphery of the Pardubice region on the border between the Orlický foothills and Elbe Valley lowlands.

History

The oldest period of the municipality is linked to the hunter’s lodge, which already stood here in Pre-Hussite times. Later on, a grazing hamlet was established around it. This was the foundation of the municipality and was called Svrchní Jelení. The first known holder of the estate was King Jiří of Poděbrad. The first reference to the municipality dates back to 1495, when magnate Vilém of Pernstein purchased the deer grounds. In around 1555, Horní Jelení was promoted to a town. In 1573 the deer estate was bought by Knight Heřman Varlich of Bubna and he built a church in 1600-1602 in Skášova. In 1865 the Bubna countship family commissioned a simple one-storey building referred to as a chateau. However, it never was the permanent residence for the countship family.

The most significant monuments

The most significant monument of the city is the Church of the Holy Trinity, which was originally a wooden church reconstructed into its stone form. It has recently undergone general renovations. The Marian Column rules the green square.

Legend

On 26.3.1602 Knight Heřman Varlich of Bubna passed away and was buried in the church in front of the main altar. According to legend, the skin of his loyal lion was placed under his head, which he brought back from his travels to the lands on the Moors.
