Chrast
|
The city Chrast lies at the foot of the Czech-Moravian Highlands, at an altitude of 292 m a.s.l. in the region of Chrudim (12 km southeast of Chrudim), together with its local neighbouring towns - Podlažice, Chacholice and Skála, whose land registry also includes a picturesque valley and village Podskála. The historical centre of the city is an Urban Heritage Zone. HistoryChrast was established in the 2nd half of the 13th century by the Benedictine monastery in Podlažice. The monastery was destroyed by Hussite troops in 1421. The so-called Devil’s Bible (Codex gigas) was written in this monastery. During the Swedish wars it was seized and taken to Sweden, where it remains till the present. It is one of the largest handwritten books in the world. Until 1427, the abbey and city were entrusted to the hands of the Hussite marshal Jakub of Kroměšín, later the estate was transferred to the royal crown. In 1868, the city joined the railway line Německý Brod – Pardubice. At the end of the 19th century, the city water mains were constructed and the first factories were established. The most significant monumentsAmong the most significant monuments is the Renaissance chateau, which served as the summer residence of the Kralovehradec Bishop for three hundred years. |
The City Museum and Gallery and exhibitions are housed in three wings of the chateau. The chateau also includes the chateau gardens, landscaped as a park in 1903 by architect Thomayer of Prague. LegendLegend says that in old times, a long time ago a Czech royal princess rode through Chrast Moravou. She fell ill and needed to be taken care of in Chrast. When she recovered, she wanted to give something to the people of Chrast as a token of gratitude. They requested if the town could use her emblem on its seal. The queen approved, however, instead of one eagle there are two on the emblem. Another legend says that they are not eagles but roosters as an expression of the fact the aldermen at the time often quarrelled and fought with each other over power like roosters.
