Březová nad Svitavou

Březová nad Svitavou is a small town on both sides of the historical Czech – Moravian borderland in the region of Svitavy. The Svitavy River flows through the town, the course of which divides the town into Czech and Moravian parts. At the land registry in Březova, the plentiful groundwater springs are significant.

History

The town Březová was established around 1300. The statute of the town Březova was declared in 1497 by King Vladislav II by a deed which permitted the town to have an eight-day annual market. The main development of industry in Březova occurred after 1850, when the town became a part of the judicial region of Svitavy during reorganisation. In 1911-1913 the first Březovský water mains were built. As a result of the war, a period of decay ensued with the departure of German inhabitants. Březova was gradually supposed to be depopulated in order to expand the protected water main zone, which however was never realised.

The most significant monuments

In the nearby vicinity of the town is the well hidden outlook tower of Jara Cimrman, which offers tourists a beautiful view of the surroundings.

Without a question, one of the most significant monuments is the Parish Church of St Bartholomew, which was built in the 13th century in the Romanesque style, later reconstructed in the Baroque style. Individuals interested in technical monuments will surely enjoy visiting the first Březovský water mains. The nature trail Through the Valley of the Svitavy River familiarises visitors with the nature, landscape and history of the settlement.

Legend

Legend says that on Good Friday, on the site of the present day medical centre in Brněnska Street a treasure could be unburied. However, the treasure seeker had to keep quiet while digging. Tradition goes that once two young men made an attempt at digging for the treasure, but a devil went by on a goat and shouted at them “A part for me too!” The gold diggers responded: “Nothing for you!” However with that they broke the silence and the treasure fell deep through the ground where nobody could find it.
