In 1213, Přemysl Otakar I gave the Broumov Promontory to the Benedictines from Prague-Břevnov. In 1256, they founded a small town and in 1300, a Benedictine Provost’s residence. The monastery’s current appearance is the result of Baroque conversion, which took place in 1726 to 1748 according to plans by the father and son Dienzenhofer.
K. I. Dienzenhofer is also the author of designs for decoration of the interiors of the monastery in Broumov, on which prominent artists of the Prague Baroque participated. The main altar is the work of J. Brokof and the paintings were painted by V. V. Reiner. The tour route leads to the monastery church, the sacristy, the refectory and the monastery library with 17,000 volumes. The father and son Dienzenhofer also participated in the Baroque modifications and construction of other cathedrals in the area around Broumov, for example the famous Chapel of the Virgin Mary on Hvězda near Křinice with its ground plan in the shape of a star. Hvězda is probably the most-visited place in the area of the Broumov Walls and also an important crossroads of tourist paths.

What you have to see…
Adršpach Rock City – a marked trail 3.5 km in length passes through the most interesting sections as well as past the small and large waterfall. Another circuit 1.5 km in length is marked out around the lake in a former sand quarry at the entrance to the rock. The ruins of Adršpach Castle on Old Castle Hill also attract visitors. There is a lovely view from here of the rock city and the nearby peaks of the Krkonoše Mountains.
Broumov Walls – several marked tourist trails lead over the ridge and ravines of the rugged rock massif. Especially popular are the rock lookout points from Božanovský Špičák (773 m) and Koruna (789 m), the rock mushrooms near the settlement of Slavný as well as the Baroque chapel and wooden cottage Hvězda.
Josefov – an urban monument zone, military fortress dating back to the end of the 18th century built like a city with right-angled network of streets. You can examine the remains of the fortifications and lapidarium with statues by the Baroque sculptor M. B. Braun, take a walk along the ramparts of the bastion and artillery ravelin, tour the ammunition stores established for safety reasons outside the fortress or visit the Museum of Military History on the main square.
Nové Město nad Metují – the centre of the city bears marks of the Venetian Renaissance. The gables of the houses with so-called swallows’ tails are especially famous. The urban monument zone includes the chateau, modified in 1909–1915 subject to request by the industrialist Bartoň family from Dobenín by the architect Dušan Jurkovič in the style of the high Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Cubism and Functionalism. The chateau park is decorated with the Baroque statues of M. B. Braun.
Náchod Chateau – who does not know the song about the “Náchod Chateau, that top so round”? The chateau really is a dominant feature of the city and offers three independent tour routes. Especially interesting are the sets of tapestries, interiors with painted ceilings and the bear pit, which is inhabited by the bears Dáša and Ludvík.
Ratibořice Chateau and Grandmother’s Valley – a residence known mostly from the work of the writer Božena Němcová at the start of Grandmother’s Valley. The Kuron family had the originally Baroque chateau rebuilt in the Central European Classicist and Empire style at the beginning of the 19th century.

You can see the only Czech copy of the famous Turin Shroud in the monastery in Broumov
According to Christian tradition, the body of Jesus Christ was wrapped in the Turin Shroud shortly after he was taken down from the cross. The imprint of a man’s figure can be seen on the shroud with the naked eye. The name is derived from the Italian city of Turin, where this relic has been kept since 1578. There are roughly forty copies of the Turin Shroud in existence around the world – and one of these was discovered in 1999 in the complex of the Benedictine monastery in Broumov, in the monastery church above the Chapel of the Holy Cross. The Turin Shroud from Broumov dates back to 1651 and is on display in the monastery refectory. It is the only copy to be found in Central Europe north of the Alps and is also one of the most successful copies.
